Other Matter has designed the architectural interior surfaces for Aesop Hainan, proposing a regenerative alternative to extractive finishes.
Other Matter Architectural Surfaces are regenerative interior finishes based on a proprietary formulation incorporating an algae-derived polymer and mineral pigments.
Free from fossil inputs, non-toxic, biodegradable and recyclable, the system is available as either a removable architectural film or a sealed finish cast directly onto substrates.
Each is hand-cast in Melbourne using low-energy methods, with fluid patterning that evokes the depth of stone.
At Aesop Hainan, both formats debuted across over 2,000 aluminium panels, a four-metre sculptural column and a translucent facade – proposing a materially expressive, low-impact alternative to petrochemical and extractive surface finishes.
This project has been shortlisted in the surface design category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
