Motive Inc has designed the Kobe Port Tower, a Kobe landmark which was reopened in spring 2024 after the completion of seismic reinforcement work.
In 1995, Kobe was devastated by the earthquake and the sight of the city's destruction left its people in despair.
Yet, just one month after the earthquake, the nighttime illumination of Port Tower, which had miraculously escaped severe damage, was resumed.
The glowing tower was like a beacon of hope in the hearts of citizens walking the long road to recovery.
Gleaming red in the night sky, Port Tower seems to possess a power that attracts visitors to the city.
"As a theme for the wayfinding design, we decided to use the attractive force of the tower's red colour," said Motive Inc.
This project has been shortlisted in the graphic design category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
