Stefano Boeri Architetti to convert depot into community hub in Rome
Italian studio Stefano Boeri Architetti has unveiled plans to transform a historic transportation depot into a greenery-covered public space in Rome's Della Vittoria neighbourhood.
Approved by the Rome City Council, the regeneration project will overhaul the existing Deposit delle Vittorie depot, which was built in the 1900s and had stood abandoned for almost 20 years, turning it into a cultural, educational and commercial hub.

Its 16,000-square-metre plot will include a central public plaza conceptualised by Stefano Boeri Architetti as a "small city" of commercial spaces, along with an 8,000-square-metre rooftop garden.
Combining public services with green spaces, the studio sought to create an accessible and welcoming space for local residents.

"Our project for the Deposit delle Vittorie represents a virtuous example of urban regeneration, thanks to the balance achieved between the valorisation of a decommissioned and now privately owned urban infrastructure and the collective interests of the residents of a historic neighbourhood in the heart of Rome," studio founder Stefano Boeri said.
At ground level, the inner courtyard of the former depot will connect to the surrounding city and function as a place of leisure for visitors.
Enclosing the courtyard will be commercial services and workspaces held within the site's renovated buildings. Renders of the development reveal one-storey buildings wrapped with geometric facade detailing and glazed fronts lined with outdoor seating.
Suspended 15 metres above ground level, the expansive, tree-lined rooftop garden has been designed to function as an "open-air museum" and will host events and installations.
Stefano Boeri Architetti conceived its layout as a labyrinthine pathway through which visitors will encounter artwork embedded within its green landscape.
According to the studio, the integration of trees, shrubs and perennials is set to improve local biodiversity and air quality, and will also contribute to shading around the complex.

Elsewhere, the studio has recently unveiled its design for a monastery with a sail-like roof in Milan and created a travertine piazza alongside Rome's Colosseum amphitheatre.
