Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects has designed The Lost Shtetl Jewish Museum in Šeduva, Lithuania.

The Lost Shtetl Jewish Museum commemorates the village of Šeduva and its 664 residents who were murdered in nearby forests in August 1941.

Designed by Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects, the museum's cluster of minimalist, hipped roof forms evokes a dreamscape of a village, a 'shtetl'.

Rather than dwelling on horror, the architecture uses natural light, handcrafted details and tranquil views to honour the lost community.

Scale-like aluminium facades shift with daylight and seasons, recalling both weathered Lithuanian vernacular buildings and wooden shingles.

Inside, each gallery's ceiling mirrors its hipped roof, creating an intimate yet airy canopy over the narrative exhibitions.
