Pilbrow & Partners has redesigned the Soho Theatre Walthamstow in London, United Kingdom.

In 1930, theatre architect Cecil Massey and interior designer Theodore Komisarjevsky took inspiration from the Alhambra to create an extraordinary Moorish extravaganza on a modest north London high street.

This remarkable interior accommodated cine-variety, bingo, rock and roll and Bollywood before closing in 2003.

Pilbrows worked with the community and Soho Theatre to show that the dilapidated building could be successfully converted to live performance.

"After three years of (unpaid) work, we persuaded Waltham Forest Council to purchase and restore the building, which opened in May 2025 to critical acclaim," said Pilbrow & Partners.

As a result, this project delivers substantial value to the local community by creating a vibrant hub for social interaction, artistic performance and outreach.

The renewed venue strengthens Walthamstow's night-time economy and expands opportunities for engagement through performance and education programmes.
