KMM Architects has restored and transformed the Oulu Central Library Saari in Oulu, Finland.
Oulu Central Library Saari is the restoration and transformation of a protected Rationalist library in Oulu, renewing a beloved 1980s civic landmark for contemporary public life.
Originally designed by Marjatta and Martti Jaatinen with interiors by Studio Nurmesniemi, the library is recognised as a nationally significant built cultural heritage site and "a rare total work of art," said KMM Architects.
Working closely with the local heritage authority, the Museum of Northern Ostrobothnia, JKMM has restored the clarity of the original design while upgrading accessibility, functionality and energy performance, reimagining the library as an open and flexible cultural destination.
