Grimshaw to integrate Boring Company station into elevated Las Vegas stadium plaza

Architecture studio Grimshaw has released plans for a reimagined entry plaza for Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, transforming parking lots into transport infrastructure and walkways.

Grimshaw's plans for the redesign of the entryway mark both the city's commitment to the Boring Company's series of underground car tunnels and the move away from parking in the area adjacent to stadiums.

"Some of the most undervalued land in American sport and entertainment is the asphalt sitting empty immediately adjacent to venues that already draw the crowd," said Grimshaw partner Andrew Byrne.

The project will see the transformation of two parking lots next to the stadium into what is being called North Plaza.

Renderings show a platform raised to meet the road that overpasses interstate freeway I-15 and slopes down towards the current parking lots.

The platform will have large surface areas for gathering and be partially covered by a translucent canopy.

Underneath the canopy, a car lane will connect to Dean Martin Drive, which runs adjacent to I-15.

According to a Grimshaw spokesperson, the Boring Company station will be underground, similar to the station at the Las Vegas Convention Centre.

If it goes ahead, the station will be part of the broader Las Vegas Loop system, which currently has two underground stations that connect to the planned system of tunnels under the city. Only a fraction of the 65 approved miles of tunnel have been completed.

The Boring Company is owned by American businessman Elon Musk and uses Tesla electric cars to traverse the tunnels.

Formally, the North Plaza will look very similar to the black-clad Allegiant Stadium, which was designed by US architecture studio Manica Architecture and is the home of NFL team the Las Vegas Raiders.

At one end of the platform will be a circular structure covered with solar panels. This structure was described as a "placeholder" for a potential outdoor venue and shade structure, according to Byrne.

A primary causeway underneath the platform will connect the stadium entrances with some of the remaining parking lots.

According to Grimshaw, the platform will serve both as an enhanced entryway and as a gathering place for fans.

Earlier this year, Dezeen took a look at modern stadium infrastructure in our Future Stadium series. Last year, the Boring Company was given a green light for a similar underground tunnel system in Dubai.
