House of Bees is a rural house designed to be an intimate refuge buried in the hills by design studio Extra Medium.

Respectful of its surroundings, the house was designed to respect the site and the architectural history of the region.

The existing structure was carefully dismembered in phases. The footprint and envelope were revised but stayed in keeping with the proportions of the old farmhouse.

More than a simple reconstruction, the house was imagined as a renewal, emphasising the home's quirks and lending voice to careful craftsmanship.

This project has been longlisted in the rural house category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
