Ste Marie has designed a yoga studio featuring cork tiles and geometric glass frames in Vancouver, Canada.
Throughout history, spaces of meditation have elicited sensorial and emotional qualities of materials, emphasising the connection between the external environment and the internal state.
With no mirrors, the music-led classes operate in darkness, as Jaybird places importance on the haptic experience: to reflect inwards and solely on one's self.
Embedding this into the design, the space focuses on the sincerity and repetition of natural materials to encourage an experience of getting out of your head and into your body. The cork tiles became the foundation of materiality, working to evoke the ephemeral, atmospheric qualities of space.
