Tank Shanghai
by Open Architecture

Open Architecture has overhauled five abandoned fuel tanks into a contemporary arts and cultural centre on the banks of the Huangpu River in Shanghai's West Bund.

Integrated into the urban landscape, while paying tribute to the site's industrial past, Tank Shanghai transforms containers of fuel into containers of culture, providing a sanctuary for people and nature, and a social equaliser that attracts and generously accommodates those from all walks of life.

It is an art center without boundaries; the formerly abandoned site is now reborn with a new exuberant energy and vitality.

This project has been longlisted in the rebirth project category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
