Algorithmic Lace
by Lisa Marks

Shortlisted for wearable design of the year at Dezeen Awards 2020, Algorithmic Lace is a bespoke lace bra for women who have had mastectomies.

Of the 1.7 million women diagnosed with breast cancer each year, 50 to 60 percent of those who have mastectomies forgo reconstructive surgery. This creates a great need for comfortable apparel that provides confidence in intimate moments and allows women to adorn their bodies and celebrate their new shapes.

The algorithmic pattern-making provides a symmetric look regardless of volume differentials, resulting in a contemporary use for the endangered craft of bobbin lace while contributing to economic opportunity for craftspeople.
