The Sandwaves
by Studio Precht and Mamou-Mani

Shortlisted for installation design of the year at Dezeen Awards 2020, designers Chris Precht and Arthur Mamou-Mani have used sand to 3D print a sustainable pavilion in Saudi Arabia.

The pavilion was created for Diriyah Season in Riyadh in 2019. The project uses local materials combined with cutting-edge digital technology to create buildings that are ecologically friendly and that respond to native culture and building traditions.

Formed of 58 3D printed modules made from sand, the sculptural installation is the largest sand-printed structure ever created. As visitors pass through, the sculpture builds narrow alleys and wide plazas, surrounding them in an immersive installation that journeys through the historical site.
