Alien Tanuki’s Space Capsule

Absence from Island has designed Alien Tanuki's Space Capsule in Hung Hom, Hong Kong.

This project sits on the boundary between new development and an ageing neighbourhood where the designers, Absence from Island, embraced a narrative approach to imagine and construct a fictional world in reality.

When visitors enter the minimalist futuristic white space capsule, they are surrounded by funnel holes diffusing mysterious light. The Alien Tanuki, moving around the capsule weightlessly, is not merely a piece of art but also a hybrid of artistry, architectural ornament and spatial defining object.

Visitors are extracted and isolated momentarily from reality, together with the Alien Tanuki, observing the world silently within the space capsule.

This project has been longlisted in the restaurant and bar interiors category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
