Skidmore, Owings & Merrill has designed the Permanent Mission of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations in New York City, United States.

This project speaks to the values of Middle Eastern hospitality and international engagement while harmonising with the historic architecture of New York City.

For more than half a century, the Turtle Bay neighbourhood of Manhattan has been a centre of international diplomacy. With a site located along Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, the new Permanent Mission of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) set out to continue this legacy as the first ground-up mission to the United Nations in a decade.

The goal was to design a 75,000sqft building that would meet the functional requirements of a diplomatic mission – while also reflecting the identity and traditions of the UAE.

It's a work of art inspired by an all-encompassing vision, comprehensively executed down to nearly every detail, from the exterior to the interior finishes and furnishings.

This project has been longlisted in the civic and cultural interiors category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
