Assemble has designed the Blue Market Bermondsey in London, UK.

This project was a collaboration between Assemble, Hayatsu Architects and Stinsensqueeze on a series of careful interventions that aim to revitalise the Blue Market – Bermondsey's historic market and town centre.

The Blue Market has a long history as a market, during its heyday in the 19th century it was said that you could "get anything down the Blue" at one of its 200 stalls.

With the decline of local industry and the closure of Surrey Docks, the market had become disconnected from the wider area, and this project spearheaded by the local community aimed to revive it and restore its place in the local landscape.

The interventions in the marketplace all focus on the creation of a renewed civic quality for Bermondsey's historic heart, ranging from prosaic improvements such as electrical infrastructure to canopies and clock towers inscribed with historical graphics.

This project has been longlisted in the rebirth project category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
