The Schwarzman Centre Renovation at Yale University by L'Observatoire International
Francis Dzikowski / OTTO

L’Observatoire International has created a multipurpose scheme that highlights new possibilities within a beautiful old building.

The renovation and extension of the Schwarzman Center at Yale University sees new life brought to the existing historic building to expand possibilities for student life

The communal facility hosts multiple functions at the same time, with each space highly flexible to respond to different modes of use during the day and night.

Exterior lighting draws subtle attention to areas such as the stairs leading to new subterranean spaces below, while inside several layers of lighting respond to different functions within each space, notably in the dramatic transitions from cool to warm white to reflect different times of day even without the presence of daylight.

This project has been longlisted in the architectural lighting design category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
