Ateljé Sotamaa has created a multipurpose dwelling in Finland, designed to contrast the exterior with the interior.

The project is a single-storey prefabricated house suitable for a wide range of uses such as a guest house, home office, spa room or a vacation home in the wild.

The structure is set out so that the exterior is designed in contrast to the interior, for the experience of one to stage the other – the exterior is closed, solid, sculptural and object-like, while the interior is open, filled with light, and connected to the world around through large windows in all directions.

The building rests on steel or concrete foundations and is lowered into place pre-assembled. Custom options include portable electricity, underfloor heating, heated windows, solid wood inbuilt furniture, fireplace, shower or bath.

UFO houses are available in different sizes. When placed on the same plot, they form a versatile, cohesive whole.

This project has been longlisted in the small building category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
