Forgeworks Architects and Richardson Studio have reimagined a mid-century bungalow, 'A House of Wood Shingle', in Bath, England.

Forgeworks Architects and Richardson Studio have redesigned and renovated a mid-century bungalow into a bold, cedar-clad, energy-efficient home in Bath, championing retrofit over rebuild with contemporary design.

Set within a conservation area and in the context of a World Heritage Site, this bold design transforms a neglected 1950s home into an energy-efficient, low-carbon family residence.

The building is cloaked in sustainable cedar cladding and high-performance insulation, vastly improving thermal efficiency without expanding its footprint.

Retaining much of the original roof structure, the interior is reimagined with a double-height hallway, dramatic kitchen-dining space and innovative roof lights that flood previously dark rooms with natural light.

The inverted roof pitch defines the home's striking external and internal forms, merging the retrofitted home with contemporary design.

This project has been longlisted in the house renovation category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
