Scenic Architecture Office has designed the Bridge of Nine Terraces, a covered pedestrian bridge in Nanjing, China.
The new pedestrian bridge over the Qixiang River, Bridge of Nine Terraces, spans approximately 36 metres and serves as the northern pedestrian entrance to the village.
To balance navigational clearance with walkability, the bridge features a lowered deck composed of nine stepped platforms suspended from a trussed arch system.
This structural approach achieves the lowest feasible deck elevation while efficiently transferring gravitational and lateral loads to the riverbank foundations via reinforced concrete bridgeheads.
Lightweight and permeable, the platforms support seating and market activities, while the semi-enclosed bridgehead pavilions define the bridge as both a symbolic gateway and a communal gathering space.
This project has been longlisted in the infrastructure and transport project category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
