Gustavo Penna Architects Associates has designed the Brumadinho Memorial, honouring the victims of the Brumadinho dam collapse in Brumadinho, Brazil.
A memorial space designed to honour the victims of the Brumadinho disaster, offering a contemplative journey through nature and architecture that preserves memory and encourages reflection.
"The client requested a space to honour the victims and provide solace to affected families," said Gustavo Penna Architects Associates.
The design faced the challenge of conveying profound loss without material consolation. Construction uses exposed concrete mixed with red earth to reflect the disaster's impact.
The landscape includes 272 yellow ipê trees symbolising hope and remembrance, integrated with natural topography to create an immersive, contemplative path.
This project has been longlisted in the civic project category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
