Carbon Cell has designed Carbon Cell, an alternative to polymer-based foams, with a patent-pending, plastic-free foam made from carbon-negative biochar.

Carbon Cell is dedicated to providing a sustainable alternative to traditional polymer-based foams, with a patent-pending, plastic-free material made from carbon-negative biochar and natural binders.

"Our unique material fills a gap in the $109 billion market for expanded foams, driven by increased legislation against single-use plastics, growing carbon tax pressure and changing consumer preferences," said Carbon Cell. "It's the only truly carbon-negative product on the market and exhibits high strength, excellent moisture buffering, good thermal performance and drop-in manufacturing."

Carbon Cell is composed of biochar, the result of processing organic biomass in the absence of oxygen. This material captures carbon stored by plants in their lifetime into a form stable for centuries.

This project has been longlisted in the material innovation category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
