Welsh + Major has designed Greybox in New South Wales, Australia.
Greybox is a courtyard house set in a coastal town on Dunghutti Country.
"It’s a house we’ve funded ourselves, a housing experiment that we use ourselves and rent out to others," said Welsh + Mayor.
An experiment set in a seaside suburban setting, Greybox takes the idea of a verandah homestead turned inside out, cross-bred with a beachside motel, a tractor shed and a cloistered abbey.
The house is made from locally available materials, utilising a lightweight frame clad entirely in grey metal sheet, with metal shutters and metal-framed windows – material choices driven by the bushfire risk.
This project has been longlisted in the house rural category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
