THISS Studio has designed the retrofit for Hartley House, a Victorian terraced house in London, England.

This project is a creative reconfiguration of the existing floor plan to create a much-loved, carefully tailored home without the need for an extension.

The retrofit demonstrates that "sometimes, unlocking the space already in our homes can be just as valuable as extending, with a fraction of the carbon," said THISS Studio.

The work involved opening up the back of the existing house and borrowing space from outside. by installing a cantilevered dining bench framed by three oversized sash windows that flooded the open plan kitchen with an abundance of natural light.

This project has been longlisted in the house extension category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
