Isamu Hazama has designed Nikki Childhood, a series of objects as a memoir of the childhood of elderly people.
Based on their childhood memories, Isamu Hazama developed a series of small furniture or objects that can be used by children.

The imperfect shapes, textures and silhouettes of the shadow-like objects evoke signs of childhood.

Nikki Childhood was made from a single Nikki tree (Japanese cinnamon) cut down in a Satoyama in Wakayama, where the designer is based.

"The elderly people in the satoyama know exactly where Nikki trees can be found because they used to chew on the roots as a snack when they were children," said Isamu Hazama.

This project has been longlisted in the collectible design category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
