Suppose Design Office has redesigned and renovated the Shibuya City Botanical Garden Fureai, a participatory botanical garden in Shibuya, Japan.
Shibuya City Botanical Garden Fureai, also known as the "smallest botanical garden in Japan," has been renovated to create a community hub that combines local production and consumption.
With a focus on interaction between nature and people, the garden offers immersive experiences such as sowing seeds, watering plants and learning about the seasonal cycle of vegetables.
The renovation incorporated new pathways, increased soil areas for planting and improved sunlight exposure – while materials such as cork were used for the mushroom-shaped mounds and five-axis machining allowed for precise, organic forms.
"The client's brief was to create a botanical garden that goes beyond the traditional viewing experience, emphasising local agriculture and community involvement," said Suppose Design Office.
The garden integrates spaces like a cafe, restaurant, shop, library and hydroponic cultivation room to foster a sense of community.
This project has been longlisted in the civic project category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
