Surf Block has designed Surf Block, insulated composite concrete forms (ICCFs), made from recycled expanded polystyrene (EPS).
Surf Blocks are insulated composite concrete forms (ICCFs) made from 85 per cent recycled surfboard foam waste, sourced from local surfboard shapers' waste on Maui and offering a sustainable and resilient alternative to traditional building methods.
Used to construct cast-in-place, steel-reinforced concrete walls, Surf Blocks deliver exceptional fire, hurricane and earthquake resistance – withstanding over four hours of flame, 240/mph winds and seismic events.
Their superior insulation cuts HVAC energy use by 30-70 per cent, reducing utility costs and carbon emissions while enhancing comfort.
Surf Blocks divert local waste from landfills, reduce concrete use by 30 per cent and simplify construction with a single-step installation.
This project has been longlisted in the material innovation category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
