Continuation Studio has designed the Tabian Bamboo Market in Qingshan Village, Hangzhou, China.

Responding to China's urban-to-rural migration trends, the Tabian Bamboo Market creatively addresses new demands for communal spaces in evolving villages.

Offering a freely accessible shelter for locals and visitors alike, the market's multi-directional entrances seamlessly connect to villagers' daily routines, while the signature undulating roofline simultaneously protects neighbours' privacy and establishes a distinctive public identity.

In addition, courtyards, walls and columns create organic gathering spots that encourage spontaneous interactions.

The innovative fusion of local bamboo with contemporary engineering techniques produces warm yet modern spaces where longtime residents, returning youth and visitors naturally interact.

As a result, this project demonstrates how rural architecture can both honour tradition and embrace necessary change, fostering social connections through thoughtful design.

This project has been longlisted in the civic project category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
