Anthony Gill Architects has designed Clifton House in Sydney, Australia.
This project is a robust new house located on a compromised site in North Bondi, where the garden is the focus, providing a much-desired privacy filter for a young family's life.
Named after the client, Bill Clifton, this home sits on the sandy flat that runs from Bondi Beach through to Sydney Harbour, where the surroundings are relatively dense for suburban Sydney, with a mix of housing types that posed a significant challenge in terms of privacy.
"The house is planned around a series of courtyards with dense planting to filter these neighbouring conditions and bring light and ventilation deep into the plan," said Anthony Gill Architects.
As a result, sloping fibreglass screens conceal lush roof gardens, ensuring privacy to the bedrooms while providing a general softness to the strategy and the overall materiality of the house.
This project has been shortlisted in the house urban category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
