Atelier Guo has designed Moon Pavilion in Huizhou, China.
Moon Pavilion is a rest stop located in Huizhou, where its original greenhouse was situated on an island within a reservoir's artificial lake, significantly increasing the complexity of construction and transportation.
In response, all steel components were prefabricated and pre-assembled in the factory to minimise on-site construction time.
Additionally, the design had to respond to the typological characteristics of the greenhouse as a distinct form of agricultural infrastructure.
The scheme preserves the original greenhouse's pin-jointed structural language, member dimensions and semi-transparent quality – while repurposing the old steel into furniture – carrying forward its agricultural heritage on both material and spatial levels.
Departing from an abandoned greenhouse, this project abstracts and recombines motifs of water, moon, flower and boat to create an uncommon space where structure, nature and poetry converge.
