Mitsubishi Jisho Design has designed the Rushood Musu bench.
Rushood Musu is a bench in the lobby of an office building in Marunouchi, offering a pause each morning for office workers and every afternoon for travellers.
The bench is built from two materials slipping out of public life: small-diameter cedar from forest thinning and 'igusa-bo' – rush rods hand-rolled from bundles of igusa wrapped in tatami facing.
Each rod is held in a CNC-milled side panel by geometry alone and any rod can be removed, replaced, or rearranged.
"The forest and the field, returning to the city – one rod at a time," said Mitsubishi.
