Soar Design Studio has designed In-Between Ecologies: Henshan Lab in Taichung City, Taiwan.

Located along Taichung Green Boulevard, this adaptive reuse project reimagines an existing residence.

The Henshan Lab design is rooted in the chaotic character and collage culture of Taiwanese urbanism, translating these qualities into spatial language.

Through the alternation of materials and construction, white boxes, timber-framed volumes and weathering steel frames are offset and juxtaposed – their interplay reflecting the layered additions and informal transformations typical of Taiwanese shophouse streetscapes.

By retaining the structural frame and removing the enclosed envelope, independent volumes for exhibition, meeting and culinary arts are inserted.
