Besley & Spresser has designed Oyster Terrazzo.

Oyster Terrazzo is a new architectural material developed over 18 months of research and testing in Australia.

It combines whole Sydney Rock Oyster shells with ochres, recycled aggregates and various admixtures to produce a durable, visually complex cladding which can withstand a marine environment.

When honed, the material expresses the distinctive and variegated forms of the shell, captured in various states of rotation.

The material was first developed for the Pier Pavilion on Sydney Harbour, where approximately 500,000 shells were used, where it has since been exhibited at the National Gallery of Victoria and shortlisted for the Australian Furniture Design Prize.
