Architecture, design and visual identity for Line Two of the Turin Metro

Dezeen Competitions: this international competition calls for architects and designers to submit proposals to enhance the design and identity of Line Two of the Turin Metro in Northern Italy.

The winning designer will be entrusted with the role of artistic director and will be responsible for bringing their design to life.

Prizes:
the overall competition winner will receive a cash prize of €150,000, plus VAT and social security contributions, as an advance payment for the artistic direction of the works at all stations. Additional finalists in phase two will receive €50,000, plus VAT and social security contributions. There are no prizes to be won in the first phase of the competition

Competition overview

This competition aims to enhance the visual identity of the future Line Two of the Turin Metro.

The Line Two of Turin Metro is organised by the Government Extraordinary Commissioner, who defines the infrastructural interventions and monitors the progress of the project. The winning designer will be entrusted with the role of artistic director and execute the proposal.

Participants will be asked to develop proposals addressing the following:

  • The design of the exterior volumes of three above-ground stations, which will be located along a future green boulevard (transforming a currently abandoned railway trench), with particular focus on the relationship with the urban context and surrounding green spaces
  • The design of station entrance canopies
  • The interior design of the station environments
  • The pedestrian connection between Carlo Alberto station, located in one of the most beautiful squares in Turin's historic centre, and the adjacent National Museum of the Italian Risorgimentot
  • The definition of a coherent and distinctive brand identity for the entire metro line
The winning designer will be entrusted with the role of artistic director

The competition is split into two phases:

Within the first phase, applications submitted will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Entrant's skills
  • Portfolio
  • Project proposals

In the second phase, proposals of the five finalists will be evaluated as follows:

  • Explanatory report
  • Project
  • Brand manual

How to enter

Participants can enter the competition via this platform.

  • In the first phase, entrants are required to submit a CV, portfolio, architectural project concept, graphic drafts and additional documents, which are outlined on the competition's website
  • In the competition's second phase, entrants are asked to produce technical documents, an architectural project brief with text and images, architectural graphic drafts, brand manual, urban construction site interface

Submission deadlines

For phase one, the submission deadline is 7 October 2025, for phase two, it is 13 January 2026.

Winners will be announced on 8 March 2026.
