UK architects Langdon Reis Zahn are one of four joint winners of a competition to design a new library and concert hall at Bodø in Norway.
The architects, plus joint winners drdh architects, General Architecture and Florian Hultsch, will now go forward to the competition’s second round.

Langdon Reis Zahn win Open International Design Competition
London – Langdon Reis Zahn (www.langdonreiszahn.com) have won the Open International Design Competition for a new Library and Theatre/Concert Hall in Bodo, Norway.
They shared the first prize along with drdh Architects (London), General Architecture (Sweden) and Florian Hultsch (Germany).
The first stage of the competition was an open ideas competition intended to clarify the location, massing and articulation of the built forms, composition and urban design of the adjacent site areas and public spaces.
The new cultural centre is projected to be approximately 11,700 sq.m. (126,000 square feet) with a construction budget of NOK 630,000,000.
Langdon Reis Zahn, drdh Architects and General Architecture have been invited to participate in the second round of the competition which will determine the practice selected to build the theatre/concert hall and the library.

Taking a look at the jury’s report, I’d say they made the right selection. The thumbnail plans are too small for any detailed study, but the image of the main element is fine: serene, uncluttered, but visually arresting. Of course the de rigueur immense cantilever is there. This will make an outstanding addition to the waterfront.

I really dig the graphic lines rendering on the 2nd image! Really a cute and interesting presentation that really shows the life around the project.

There are indications of what could be very a strong project here in terms of volumes and graphics. Good architecture is about more than this though, as I think most folks know.
Be great to see it developed up a bit, but it’s still effectively a quarter finalist at this point. With a 25% chance of seeing it built, as well as having no idea of it’s organisation, functionality, or materiality, i’ll reserve my outright commitment to this particular lobby group for the moment..
