Milan 2011: More about Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec in Milan - this time a wooden bird for design brand Vitra.
Called L’Oiseau, the piece will be presented at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile.
Vitra also produce the Eames House Bird (shown above, alongside the Bouroullecs' design), based on an ornament that American designers Charles and Ray Eames brought back from their travels.

L'Oiseau, Vitra
It is a simple bird without any other function than trying to propose a caring presence, a pleasant company. We have always been fascinated by animal representations whether they are primitive or more contemporary - from ivory bears made by the Inuit community to the Finnish birds made in blown glass. It could seem outdated to be interested in such subjects however we truly think that it is a necessary fantasy to continue supplementing this symbolic bestiary.

Very prenentious, these brothers are not the Eames, stop standing on their shoulders.
True, the brother Bouroullec are not Eames and the bird isn't made by Eames either. It's a Eames house bird. That means they bought the bird for their house in California, it's probably native american or african handcraft.
and now for a more serious comment. (it took a while to think what I really thought about this…and that is worth a compliment I think..makes you stop and think but….)
such a pity that this modestly well designed/shaped object will probably be a very expensive piece of wood used by a lot of people to prove that they understand design and know about designers.
Objects designed for status and branding are dangerous territories for designers if they want to stay sincere.

This is a beautiful and elegant sculpture. I wouldn't mind having it on my desk. Just unfortunate that it will, no doubt, be – as CBT stated above – marketed as a status piece and priced accordingly
A hommage to the Eames house bird, is it really neccessary ?
Does it bring us something that the original doesn't ?
For me the answer is no,
Although for the Bouroullecs it puts them in terms of communication closer to the Eames.
Also the original 'unique' bird was something personal to the Eames and as CBT evokes this new version will probably become an expensive commercial item.
I'm sure the Eames would have said go out there, travel the world and find your own 'bird', a bird that means something to you . (and don't buy a production run from some trendy design brand)
It's nice… in an etsy sort of way, not in a Bouroullecs + Vitra sort of way. Don't think there's anything new about it.
