Dezeen Showroom: Italian kitchen brand Falmec and designers Studio Ferriani have created an extractor hood called Monolith, which integrates into the benchtop and doubles as storage for utensils.

Part of the Elements Collection, Monolith incorporates a 90-centimetre-long suction element along with variously sized storage units that can be placed in custom configurations.

Perfect for kitchen islands, the unit can provide a divider between the kitchen and living space, while also storing tools such as ladles, spices, knives and cutting boards that help to disguise its more technological function.

"The models making up our Elements Collection transcend traditional boundaries of aspiration, interpreting the suction element in an innovative way, becoming part of a modular architecture that is multifunctional and fully integrated into the kitchen," said Falmec.

Monolith has a matt black aluminium frame with a black glass front, while a strip of integrated lighting in the base suffuses the kitchen with a warm glow.

When in use, the module opens slightly to remove fumes and allow access to controls.
