Six innovative infrastructure projects from bridges to boardwalks

With six days left to enter Dezeen Awards 2024, we look back at last year's six shortlisted infrastructure and transport projects, which include a rolling bridge and submerged bicycle park.

This category rewards new-build infrastructure or refurbishment of existing facilities where the projects exhibit an innovative solution to delivering public utilities.

Infrastructure projects encompass a diverse range of building types from railway and underground stations and energy hubs to bridges, highways and boardwalks, all tools which enable economic growth, connectivity and improved living conditions.

Dezeen Awards 2024 in partnership with Bentley is open for entries. Submit your entry by 23:59 London time on 30 May to avoid late entry fees.

Mexican studio Colectivo C733 was shortlisted for its square-shaped pedestrian pier suspended over a coastal lake containing the planet's most extensive freshwater bacterial reef and living stromatolites in Bacalar, Mexico.

The 800-meter-long, open-air boardwalk with panoramic views was designed to preserve the mangroves below while allowing visitors to walk above the water.

The Elizabeth Line, London, UK

Nine architecture studios headed by Grimshaw Architects designed for the diverse array of London stations for the new Elizabeth Line.

The line span 118 kilometres across southern England from Reading to Shenfield and its construction marks the most significant growth to London's underground railway system in over a century.

Jahad Metro Plaza, Tehran, Iran

Iranian practice KA Architecture Studio created a metro station in Tehran enclosed by a cluster of barrel-vaulted forms constructed from handmade bricks.

Located on a busy traffic intersection near the centre of Iran's capital, the new entrance for the Meydan E-Jahad metro station contributes to a broader push to reorient the city towards pedestrians after decades of prioritising cars.

The Memorial Park Land Bridge and Prairie, Houston, US

Called the Kinder Land Bridge and Cyvia and Melvyn Wolff Prairie, the project reconnects two green spaces split by a six-lane highway.

US studio Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects integrated the Houston highway into a sprawling park as part of a decade-long plan to revitalise a wilderness area near downtown.

IJboulevard, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Dutch studio VenhoevenCS Architecture + Urbanism completed an underwater bicycle park for Amsterdam Central Station, which provides parking for 4,000 bicycles and a panoramic pedestrian boulevard above the IJ.

Cody Dock Rolling Bridge, London, UK

Designed by architect Thomas Randall-Page, the Cody Dock Rolling Bridge in east London is part of a revitalisation plan by architecture studio PUP Architects for the former Victorian dock on the River Lea.

Informed by Victorian industrial design and developed over seven years, the over a small channel utilises manual levers for rotation.
