Fire Station Wilrijk
by Happel Cornelisse Verhoeven

Karin Borghouts

Happel Cornelisse Verhoeven has built a fire station in Antwerp using red glazed bricks to make the building stand out.

The wooden interior creates a homely atmosphere. Its functional layout is geared to a rapid turn-out. The studio has created the space with emphasis on water reuse and low-energy consumption.

Particular attention was paid to the tectonics of the elevations, which express the typological stacking of a garage, living quarters and tower: an "architecture parlante" in which form and appearance provide an unmistakable reminder of the building's function and the urgency of its users' job.

This project has been longlisted in the civic building category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
