Old Melilla Market Refurbishment
by Angel Verdasco Arquitectos

Angel Verdasco Arquitectos has converted a historic market in Spain into an education centre clad with aluminium lattices.

This architects aimed to address local social conflicts, reconstructing both the area and, in turn, the relationships between its users.

The abandoned Central Market has been transformed into three educational centers: a music academy, language school and adult education center. The studio proposed a "social catalyst" to unite two different communities (Muslim and Christian) again.

The local ceramic materials are reinterpreted and adapted to the local climate. The facade and latticework are ventilated with different densities, depending on the orientation.

This project has been longlisted in the rebirth project category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
