Urbach Tower
by University of Stuttgart

ICD/ITKE University of Stuttgart

University of Stuttgart's Institute for Computational Design and Construction has designed a curved wooden structure in Remstal, Germany.

The Urbach Tower is a unique wood building. The material-driven design emerges from an innovative self-shaping manufacturing process of the curved wood components.

This pioneering development constitutes a paradigm shift in timber manufacturing, from elaborate and energy-intensive mechanical forming processes that require heavy machinery to a process where the material shapes by itself.

The softly curving wood structure intensifies the visitors' spatial and tactile experience while framing the natural landscape.

The tower provides a striking landmark, as well as a place of shelter and reflection, all built from a highly ecological and sustainable building material.

This project has been longlisted in the small building category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
