Hoverbox on frozen river
Lindsay Reid

Hoverbox is a white-box pavilion that optically cuts off from the outside world, allowing visitors to only perceive the legs and feet of other visitors.

Visitors enter an upside-down labyrinth via one of two narrow openings. Corridors snake through the body of the building and end at benches. The installation is a play involving distance and proximity.

Sudden encounters bring strangers together, secret visual contacts through holes in walls invite visitors to spy on their surroundings, which are difficult to recognise.

The object is made of a processed wood material. Steel supports on which the boxes stand are covered in human clothing, giving the impression of being other visitors. The box is black on the inside; on the outside it is painted white.

This project has been longlisted in the installation design project category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
