Arroyo Bridge
by Gigante AG

Iwan Baan

The product of a 6-year research initiative, the Arroyo Bridge is the first structure of its kind.

From a distance, the biomorphic shape integrates into a steep landscape of eucalyptus, coming into view only upon approach. The tubular silhouette draws inspiration from the vascular architecture of leaves and the layered branching system of trees in the neighboring forest.

The sculptural pedestrian span was originally conceived as a speculative project, during a design-build studio at the USC School of Architecture. It was realised using a pioneering computational design and collaborative manufacturing process with humans and robots working side-by-side.

This project has been longlisted in the small building category of Dezeen Awards 2021.
