Brearley Architects+Urbanists designed the Yuandang Bridge in Qingpu, China.

This project is located in the prime location where Shanghai and Jiangsu meet.

The 6m-wide bridge deck is divided into a cycling path, vegetation band and walking path. The winding bridge has three widened sections for resting.

The 586m-long hybrid infrastructure resembles a ribbon and echoes water ripples on the lake below – while trees and shrubs are incorporated into the bridge, giving the appearance of a floating garden.

Drawing inspiration from local sculptural traditions, the bridge’s pavilion explores contemporary mathematics modelling to create a porous wall that is both sculpture and playground. The bridge is a dynamic ensemble, integrating ecology, transportation, landscape, and culture.

This project has been longlisted in the landscape project category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
