Mannal House by Denizen Works
Gilbert McCarragher

Denizen Works has created a sculptural family home amid farm buildings on the west coast of Scotland.

The project is located on the Isle of Tiree on the working yard of the main house of the township of Mannal, peppered with various farm buildings, ruins and a byre in which the house sits.

The agricultural relics drove the formal organisation of the house and in particular the ruins of the gabled byre. The resultant house, split into two wings, nestles into the rebuilt stone walls which drive the main architectural expression of the building.

A natural stone gable, seen on approach, is transformed into its negative form on the sea-facing elevation using large panes of glass to create a strong connection to the landscape. Using modern methods of construction, the timber SIPs kit structure was fabricated off-site, reducing work on site.

Mannal House is the studio's second project on Tiree, following House No.7 in Heanish.

This project has been longlisted in the rural house category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
