Visitor Centre and Remote Observatories of the Lonja Wetlands by Roth i Čerina
Marko Mihaljević

Roth&Čerina has created a visitor centre and observatories in the wetlands of Lonjsko Polje Nature Park in Croatia that showcase a symbiotic relationship with their surroundings.

The project sits among a network of entry-points, visitor centres and observatories placed within the nature park.

The structures of both the visitor centre and the observatories use contemporary and sustainable materials, locally sourced with minimum transport costs and put in place by local builders.

The visitor centre repeats scales and materials of its surrounds, and encompasses two buildings, placing an info-point and administration in one, and an exhibition and auditorium in the other. The observatories are verticals of past watchtowers that enable a view of the horizontal wetland and its diverse lifeforms, in which the visitors remain hidden to the wildlife and livestock passing by.

This project has been longlisted in the small building category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
