Kaminsky Arkitektur has designed ETC in Västerås, Sweden.

This project is a new visionary project that bridges public participation and housing affordability, weaving climate-positive design and crowdfunding.

With a cohort of more than 1,000 individuals investing in the project and pushing for an alternative housing model that counters ongoing development paradigms, this public support has not only contributed to the project's realisation but also served as a case study on how to design multi-residential buildings with a minimal environmental footprint.

A main design feature in the ETC Tract House is the use of solar panels. Solar panels reduce emissions in the northern European electricity grid by approximately 700 kg CO2 eq per 1,000 kilowatt-hours. With the project, the houses are designed to produce approximately 150,000 kilowatt-hours per year, reducing emissions by 105 tons of CO2 eq.

The plus figure of the project is therefore improved from 580 to 685 tons. As such, no other newly built house in Sweden comes as near to such climate-positive figures.

This project has been longlisted in the sustainable building category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
