Local Works Studio has designed and fabricated a range of low-carbon outdoor furniture using local waste for the gardens of a new Maggie's Centre at Southampton General Hospital.

The project sees elements diverted from landfill – such as surplus construction materials from the building of the centre and old fire hose from nearby Hampshire Fire Service HQ – transformed through care and craft into bespoke chairs, benches and tables that are comfortable, tactile and playful.

The furniture works in harmony with the building and garden to provide restorative spaces where anyone affected by cancer can reflect alone or be supported in the company of others.

This project has been shortlisted in the sustainable design category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
