EHS ArchiLab and Hsuyuan Kuo Architects & Associates have converted the Taiping Elementary School into a multiple-use public space in Keelung City, China.

The Taiping Elementary School closed in 2017 due to population shifts and declining communities, where adaptive reuse of the project aimed to transform the school grounds into a public space to regenerate the surrounding communities.

Timber structures such as stairs, an observation platform, and a suspended bridge were added.

"The project explores nature and city convergence and reflects on the harbour's past and the city's future," said EHS ArchiLab and Hsuyuan Kuo Architects & Associates.

"Mountains and cities, past and present, all meet here."

This project has been longlisted in the civic project category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
