Kurosawa Kawara-Ten has renovated the Kurosawa Kawara-Ten Office in Chiba, Japan.

This project is the renovation of an abandoned house in the rural area of Chiba, Japan, where a declining heavy industry caused a decreasing population.

Due to the decrease in population, there is an increasing number of abandoned houses in the suburbs and rural agricultural areas. The COVID-19 pandemic also accelerated the migration to the suburbs for more space and less density.

"We planned the office for the team searching and opening those abandoned farmer’s houses. For the office, using abandoned materials [in] the abandoned house shows...possibility for declining local areas," said Kurosawa Kawara-Ten.

This project has been longlisted in the small project category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
