SSdH has designed and expanded Dunstan, a family home in Melbourne, Australia.

Dunstan celebrates an architectural character that is the sum of its parts; a step, an oversized beam, an existing dwelling, a window, a shed and colour.

Within the Newlands post-war housing estate, modest clinker-brick homes of varying types hold an accretion of ad-hoc built forms: annexes, carports, extensions, outbuildings, services and adaptations, that allow for changing needs.

"The client's brief was for a home in which they could retire comfortably, with connection to place and landscape," said SSdH.

"Future ease of accessibility was a key concern, due to the existing steps at the front entry of the property, site levels, and access was resolved through the inclusion of a gradual landscape ramp along the Eastern boundary."

Dunstan reflects this context by emphasising the addition and, in doing so, contributes to this language of occupation, use and time.

This project has been longlisted in the house renovation category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
